The Best Street Food in Hampshire

Over the last couple of years, the Street Food scene in Hampshire (especially Portsmouth) has grown exponentially. With the opening of Outside-In Food Court, the British Street Food Awards in Gunwharf Quays and many a festival, local vendors have been present at several events and I’ve had the chance to try a few different vendors & dishes. From Chinese dumplings to Venezuelan arepas and plenty in-between, I’ve compiled a selection of my favourite places for street food in Hampshire.

I’ll be updating this guide to the best street food in Hampshire as I discover new places – and if you have a recommendation for some excellent street food, leave me a comment so that I can check it out!

DUMPLING DUMPLING

Dumpling Dumpling - street food in Hampshire

Originally from the Isle of Wight, Dumpling Dumpling have been around for a few years now, serving up fusion tastes in their aptly named ‘flavourbombs’. Fried or steamed, their dumplings pack a real flavour punch and always leave you wanting more.

When Outside-In Food Court opened in Portsmouth last year, Dumpling Dumpling set up a semi-permanent stand there and have been serving their dumplings to the people of Portsmouth each week.

Their flavour combinations change regularly, with some of my favourites being the garlic & herb chicken dumpling, vegan pesto mac n’ cheese dumpling and the chinese pork dumpling. They also have ‘The Great DD Sharing Platter’ (pictured above) which makes for an excellent lunch for two, and it’s a great way to try a few dumpling flavours!

You can also take part in Dumpling Workshops (find out more here) and get frozen dumplings delivered for you to cook at home (find out more here).

My top picks: Vegan pesto mac n’cheese dumpling, chinese pork dumpling, hoisin not duck dumpling, chilli & garlic prawn dumpling, sharing platter, funky asian fries

AREPA2GO

Another vendor at Outside-In Food Court, Arepa2Go serve up some seriously good, authentic Venezuelan street food. You’ll find a huge variety of traditional arepas to choose from, alongside loaded fries and some of the best fried chicken strips I’ve ever had. (You’ll also find Arepa2Go featured in my guide to the best fried chicken in Hampshire).

I’ve eaten from Arepa2Go a few times and I love their arepas – fresh corn pockets filled with a variety of fillings. They’re comforting, delicious and full of flavour, and I’d really recommend you try one!

My top picks: Sifrina arepa, fried chicken strips, loaded fries

NEED STREET FOOD

Need Street Food - street food in Hampshire

Need Street Food were finalists in the British Street Food Awards, they’ve got a pub in Portsmouth and they regularly serve at markets in London. Need Street Food are seriously popular in Portsmouth – and for good reason. Their French Dip rolls are incredible, and I’m yet to try their other offerings from their test kitchen at The Merchant House – think loaded fries, mac n’ cheese, gyros and seriously good fried chicken burgers. Pete, the owner of Need Street Food, always thinks outside of the box and his food really reflects that – inventive, delicious street food that is just so good. Plus, with every meal you buy from their street food stand or in their test kitchen, a portion of what you pay goes to help their charity partner with malnutrition-fighting meals. As their motto goes – Tastes Good, Does Good.

If you can’t find these guys at an event, you can visit their kitchen at The Merchant House whenever you like – I’m yet to do this, but it’s high on my list for this year.

NATTY’S JERK

Natty’s Jerk is right up there with my favourite street food in Hampshire – I love absolutely everything about this Caribbean kitchen. The newest addition to Outside-In Food Court, this family run kitchen is serving up jerk chicken, curry goat, burgers, sweet treats and so much more.

I’ve tried the majority of their menu now, after ordering a delivery of their food and eating at Outside-In a few times – and I love it all. Natty’s food packs some serious jerk flavours, their fried chicken burger is incredible and I love their fresh apple & mango slaw. Anything you try from Natty’s Jerk is guaranteed to be delicious!

My top picks: Jerk chicken wings, Curry goat fries, Jerk fried chicken burger, Jerk boneless chicken thigh

ONE TONNE BURGER CO

You can’t beat a really good, juicy, meaty burger – and One Tonne Burger Co serve up some excellent ones. Currently based at Outside-In Food Court, but originally started in London, these are some seriously good burgers.

I personally would recommend trying ‘The One’ – double patty, double bacon, double cheese, double onion jam. You can see why this is one of their most popular burgers!

BREENO’S KITCHEN

Ready for some Indo/Pak fusion flavours? That’s exactly what you’ll get from Breeno’s Kitchen. I was excited to try the food from Breeno’s earlier in the year, as I’d been eyeing them up for a while – and it is good.

With plenty of vegan options, street food platters, curries and more, Breeno’s Kitchen has lots to offer anyone who visits. One of my personal favourites is the Masala fries – an incredible combination of flavours loaded atop crispy fries. Yum.

THE PANORMUS PIZZERIA

The Panormus Pizzeria is a fairly new addition to the ever popular Outside-In Food Court, bringing classic Italian flavours to the people of Portsmouth. Whether you’re craving a pizza or some Italian tapas, there is plenty on offer here.

I’ve tried a half & half pizza from The Panormus Pizzeria and it was excellent – really fresh dough and high quality ingredients. My personal favourite is the Pizza Parma – simply topped with parma ham, parmesan, rocket & a drizzle of olive oil, but so delicious.
