One of the most famous sights in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula is Kirkjufell – more recently known for a scene in Game of Thrones, and otherwise known as Church Mountain. Kirkjufell was a beautiful sight, with the frozen Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall casting a mysterious air. I’d never seen a frozen waterfall like this before – the warmer water underneath the frozen shell was still flowing! Kirkjufell was the final stop on our Snaefellsnes tour with Reykjavik Excursions, before starting the drive back to Reykjavik. If you’re travelling here yourself, there is a small car park at the base of Kirkjufell.

Kirkjufell is thought to be one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland – and we could definitely see why! Even in the depths of winter, with a bitterly cold wind and frozen waterfalls it was beautiful – eerily so. From your vantage point down by the waterfalls you’re treated to a breathtaking view across the landscape and over to the sea.
It really was incredibly cold though!

If you Google Kirkjufell, you’ll mostly be presented with photographs of the mountain and waterfalls in the summer – a very different sight to the winter months, and definitely worth visiting at both times of the year.

One of the things that really stood out for me during our trip to Iceland was how everything had the ability to make you feel really small. Whether we were clambering up volcanic craters, standing above Gullfoss, looking out over Thingvellir National Park or standing here in front of Kirkjufell, everything has such a huge amount of power and influence. Iceland really is the most magical, fascinating place.
I hope you enjoyed this brief look at Kirkjufell, one of the most iconic mountains in Iceland. As I’ve said before, we booked all of our excursions for our trip through Reykjavik Excursions, who we were really impressed with – and we will absolutely use them again if we return!
Have you ever been to Iceland? What was your favourite sight?
