AD – This meal was complimentary in return for a review.
Wahaca is known for their Mexican street food – but how much do you know about the story of Wahaca? I headed over to Wahaca Southampton in West Quay last week for a Día de los Muertos party and an evening of margaritas and delicious Mexican Food.
Wahaca was co-founded back in 2007 by Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers and has since opened up several restaurants throughout the UK – and they have been very successful. Thomasina was inspired by her time living in Mexico, and was searching for a way to bring the classic flavours of Mexican street food back to the UK, and she has done a brilliant job! The dishes & flavours at Wahaca are authentic, delicious and filling, and transport you to the streets of Mexico where the dishes draw their inspiration.
One of the brilliant things about Wahaca – besides their very impressive range of Tequilas – is how well equipped they are to deal with allergies. Awareness of all types of allergies has really grown over the last few years, but not all restaurants have adapted to the need to declare ingredients and customise dishes to accommodate allergies – but Wahaca pride themselves on this. Their customer service is excellent, and you can rest assured that they will be able to offer you a delicious meal, whether you have a dairy allergy, gluten intolerance, any other kind of allergy – or if you have a specific diet. A fantastic place to choose for any diet and any occasion!
So, without any more blabbing from me – shall I show you some food?

You’ll find Wahaca Southampton in the outside area of West Quay, next to the bridge from the multi-storey. You won’t be able to miss their neon sign!
There’s plenty of seating upstairs & down, but I’d suggest booking as it’s a popular spot – and you’ll understand why when you see just how delicious the food is!
We took our seats and immediately got stuck in to a margarita making masterclass – an excellent way to unwind after a day at work! I’m a big fan of a margarita (aren’t we all?) so I made sure to give it a go – and the Wahaca recipe is simply your choice of tequila, freshly squeezed lime juice and some ice – shake it all up, line the rim of your glass with salt and pour it in. Delicious.
Our margaritas were washed down with some freshly made guacamole and tortilla chips.

Plus some refried beans topped with queso for dunking your tortilla chips into! These were delicious – refried beans are always a favourite of mine.

Next was the tacos and assorted Mexican street food – there was plenty to share, and the more people you bring, the more dishes you can try!
First up were the Pork pibil tacos – slow cooked pork topped with pink pickled onions. These are the perfect choice if you’re a big meat eater – there was a generous amount of pork in each taco and they were bursting with flavour.

Next were the black bean & three cheese quesadillas – which were one of my favourite dishes from the evening. Lots of oozy melted cheese and smokey black beans – delicious.

Time for more tacos! These are the chicken & avocado tacos, topped with guacamole and a green tomatillo salsa. It was interesting to have the classic flavours of chicken, bacon & avocado given a Mexican twist – and it turned out to be very tasty.

The tacos are a very generous size!

The next lot of tacos that arrived in front of us divided the table – Plaintain tacos. I’d never actually tried plantain before – I actually do my best to avoid ordering it if I see it on a menu – so it was interesting to try these tacos for a complete plantain newbie. I didn’t love these as much as the other tacos – but they were surprisingly nice!
The plantain was slightly sweet and crispy on the outside, and came topped with crumbled feta. I’m not sure whether I’d order these again as I’m not necessarily a fan of sweet & savoury tastes combined, but they might be worth trying if your whole party wants a bite!

Something a little different next – a sweet potato & feta taquito. A crisp blue corn tortilla filled with sweet potato and feta, topped with caramelised onion, salsa & chipotle mayo. Very delicious! The crisp texture of the tortilla paired very well with the soft sweet potato filling.

Next up were some more quesadillas, and these were a Mexican take on a classic grilled chicken club. Interesting? Yes! These were filled with grilled chicken, avocado, lettuce, cheese and chipotle mayo.

I’ve saved my favourite for last – battered fish tacos. Cooked using sustainable MSC certified fish, these were served with shredded slaw, picked cucumber and chipotle mayo. I tend to order fish whenever we’re out for a meal, and so a fish taco would normally be my choice – and these were delicious. A crisp batter with perfectly cooked, flaky white fish.

After our Mexican feast, we just about had room for one more thing – churros. Who can resist churros? These crisp Mexican doughnuts were served with a rich chocolate sauce, and were excellent.
Did you know that churros are actually traditionally eaten for breakfast in Mexico? We had no idea – but I do like the idea of it being socially acceptable to have a doughnut for breakfast!

Wahaca Southampton combines friendly, attentive service with a family friendly atmosphere and delicious Mexican street food – and they do it all so well.
There are several Wahaca restaurants across the UK, so I’d recommend heading to your nearest and sampling some tacos for yourself! Make sure to try a margarita when you go – you can’t eat Mexican food without one!
Have a browse of the menu at Wahaca Southampton here. I’m curious to know – what’s your favourite taco filling?
