Padstow is, as you probably already know, a hotspot for celebrity chefs and excellent seafood – so it’ll come as no surprise that Stein’s Fish & Chips is seriously good. Situated on the South Quay and overlooking the Camel Estuary, you can’t get much closer to the sea when you’re eating fish & chips. Owned by Rick Stein, the fish & chip shop is extremely popular, always busy and the best I’ve ever had.
Stein’s Fish & Chips offers two ways of eating – dining in at their (rather nice) seating area with table service, or traditional takeaway at the other entrance. We opted for takeaway as we were a short walk from our holiday cottage and the seated area is always very busy. There’s usually a queue right out of the door!

As it’s a Stein’s eatery, you’ll find far more than just your average fish & chips choices on the menu – with the likes of battered oysters, fresh scallops, chicken wings and monkfish to tempt you.
We opted for a seafood feast on this occasion, with plenty to share – as always!

Salt & pepper prawns with an asian salad garnish – these were just as tasty as they look. Very fresh, plenty of seasoning and the crunchy salad was a nice addition. These come in at £6.95 for three prawns, which did feel a little bit pricey – but, it is Stein’s after all!
We also ordered some onion rings to share, which were very good – big, crispy and a generous portion for £3.50.

For the main event we chose battered plaice and chips – plaice is always my fish of choice from a chippy if it’s available! The fish was beautifully cooked and delicate, with a crunchy batter and crisp, slightly soft chips – just the way they’re supposed to be.
The battered place comes in at £11.95 and the chips are £3.50 – making it significantly pricier than your standard fish & chip shop, but much better quality & far tastier.

Make sure to buy a pot of homemade aioli for dunking your chips into – you will regret it if you don’t.

All in all, an excellent spot for fish & chips – and far better than your average chippy. If you’re planning a trip to Padstow, make sure to add Stein’s Fish & Chips to your list of places to visit – it’s a good’un!
