Gullfoss was undoubtably my favourite experience from our trip to Iceland – it was absolutely breathtaking. It was the final stop on our Golden Circle tour with Reykjavik Excursions and in my opinion they definitely saved the best for last! When you park up there’s no sign of the waterfall – but as you make your way along the wooden boardwalk to the cliffs, you start to hear the thundering sound of water plunging down into a ravine.
Gullfoss is unlike any other waterfall I’ve ever seen, with a vast amount of water converging from different heights – a multi-level waterfall that is so unique. The water was incredibly blue and beautiful.

Further along the windy cliff edge are even more breathtaking views of Gullfoss, with a lot of frozen water which was incredible to see. It’s worth noting that it was very windy along the cliff edge and extremely cold – so walk with caution and wear your warmest jacket!

When you visit on the shorter Golden Circle tour, you’re given around 40 minutes at Gullfoss – which is plenty of time to take in the views, walk along the cliff edge and head back to your coach before you get too cold.

Even further along the cliff walk was my favourite view, looking back along the deep ravine of Gullfoss. As it was very icy, we weren’t able to walk along the lower path to be closer to the waterfall, but during the warmer months you could venture along here and get a different perspective.

I was so pleased that we’d booked our trip to Iceland for the beginning of March when it would still be cold, as the landscapes around us were made so much more beautiful by the snow.

After 40 minutes walking along the cliff, admiring Gullfoss and taking as many photos as possible, the icy wind had left us a little numb – so it was a bit of a relief when we headed back to our warm coach. Gullfoss is absolutely worth seeing even if you do end up a little cold!

Gullfoss was incredible to see and is absolutely somewhere I would recommend visiting if you’re planning a trip to Iceland – it’s definitely a must-see. We really enjoyed the hassle-free tour from Reykjavik Excursions, so if you don’t fancy hiring a car and driving the Golden Circle yourself this would be a great option – and it’s excellent value for money.
After our day touring, we arrived back in Reykjavik at around 5pm – so the tour did take a little longer after various hotel drop-offs.
