Josie’s (Bishops Waltham, Winchester & Petersfield)

Josie’s has fast become one of my favourite spots for breakfast, brunch or lunch – and for good reason. You can get most things with fried chicken, and if it’s not part of a dish – you can order it on the side! Their fried chicken is crispy, with a tasty batter and huge portion sizes – I love it.

They’ve got branches in Bishops Waltham, Winchester and Petersfield (with another opening soon in Romsey), so there should be one to suit your whereabouts.

My top picks: Buttermilk Fried Chicken Pancakes, Breakfast Taco with Fried Chicken.

Arepa2Go, Portsmouth

Tucked away inside the new Outside-In Food Court in Portsmouth you’ll find a range of street food vendors – one of which is Arepa2Go. They serve up traditional Venezuelan street food in the form of arepas (which are excellent) – but my focus today is on their fried chicken strips. They are excellent, and worth a visit to Outside-In just for these. Crispy, succulent and with the perfect amount of spice, this is some seriously good fried chicken.

My top picks: Fried Chicken Strips

Nice Slice, Portsmouth

Nice Slice is situated in the newly reopened The Greenwich pub in Southsea – primarily serving up giant pizzas and slices, but also serving some excellent fried chicken. I love a good crispy chicken wing, and the offering for Nice Slice was seriously good. Covered in a house dust and served with a dip of your choice, we really enjoyed these wings and I’m planning on heading back to try one of their fried chicken burgers (which look amazing).

Hubbox, Portsmouth

Hubbox is fresh to the Portsmouth food scene, but they’re no novice when it comes to fried chicken. Originating from the West Country, Hubbox cook up food inspired by American street food using locally sourced Cornish ingredients – now here in Hampshire! Their fried chicken tenders pack a serious punch and a very generous portion size. You’re given a choice of sauces to dunk your tenders in – I’d recommend the Hub hot sauce (which isn’t too hot – just delicious). These were seriously juicy and very tender… pardon my pun.

They’ve also got a range of chicken burgers on the menu – one of which is the Katsu Chicken burger you’ll see above. Panko coated and fried, this chicken burger packed a real flavour punch and definitely deserves a place in this guide. The next time we visit, I’ve got my eye on the Mother Clucker Fries – topped with, you guessed it, fried chicken! Doesn’t that sound amazing?

My top picks: HBX Chicken Tenders with Hub Hot Sauce, Katsu Chicken Burger

Price: £

Website: Visit Hubbox here

FEED, Portsmouth

FEED is a real gem nestled in the heart of Portsmouth, just outside the ever popular Gunwharf Quays. Serving up excellent burgers, fries, breakfasts & pancakes, FEED also cook up some seriously good fried chicken. Pair that with fluffy buttermilk pancakes and you’re in for a real treat!

My top picks: Fried chicken pancakes, smokey bacon burger, garlic chilli fries, chilli cheese bites

Price: £

Natty’s Jerk, Portsmouth

Natty’s Jerk Kitchen is the newest addition to Outside-In Food Court – and they serve up some seriously good food. I’ve loved everything I’ve tried from them – but if you’re here, you’ll be interested in their fried chicken offerings!

The fried jerk chicken burger is the one for you. It is unlike anything I’ve tried before, with such a unique & unusual combination of flavours and textures – delicious. Jerk chicken thighs rolled in seasoned flour and fried, served in a vegan brioche bun and topped with Natty’s pickled mango & apple slaw, plantain and plenty of jerk BBQ sauce. How good does that sound?

My top picks: Fried jerk chicken burger, jerk chicken wings, boneless jerk chicken thigh, curry goat fries

Price: £-££

Koop + Kraft, Waterlooville

Koop + Kraft has become a firm favourite of ours, and for good reason! Located in Cowplain, Waterlooville, Koop + Kraft is a fairly new restaurant specialising in big burgers, dirty fries and, of course, plenty of fried chicken.

We’ve ordered in a few times from them and each time the chicken has been fantastic – the boneless fried chicken thighs & fried chicken tenders are excellent. (They’re also a great alternative to KFC!)

My top picks: boneless fried chicken thighs, fried chicken tenders, dirty fries

Price: £

Get Plucked, Southampton

Get Plucked is a relatively new addition to Southampton alongside sister restaurant Bite Me Burger – and the fried chicken offerings are pretty good! Bite Me Burger specialises in miniature burgers, including the Get Plucked fried chicken burger – a delicious mouthful.

However, my favourite from Get Plucked absolutely has to be the chicken cones. Fried chicken, tossed in honey butter (yum) and wrapped in a crispy waffle cone. I can’t get over just how delicious this was! An absolute winner for me, and I can’t wait to have another chicken cone.

My top picks: Chicken cone (get the honey butter!), Pluck Me burger

Price: £
