Under the train tracks is where you’ll find what are, in my opinion, the best burgers in Portsmouth. FEED is located just outside of the bustling Gunwharf Quays shopping centre, in the arches underneath the railway line from Portsmouth Harbour. Its unique setting alone should be enough to intrigue you and draw you in – but it’s what’s inside the kitchen that really makes FEED so special!
FEED Portsmouth started out as more of a general cafe before undergoing a complete rebrand & rethink back in 2014. I was actually living in a house on the street opposite FEED at the time, while at university, and visited regularly when they reopened – and there started my love for this unique burger spot. I’m pleased to say that it’s even better now than it was 5 years ago, and I’m so pleased to see a small, independent business like FEED doing so well in such a busy, high-demand location.
Popular with locals and university students (which are a big part of the city – it’s why I first came to Portsmouth!), FEED is known for their excellent breakfasts & burgers, reasonable prices, unique setting and friendly staff – the recipe for success.
Let’s head inside!

Being in such an unusual location means that FEED is a very small restaurant – seating less than 30 people inside I’d say, meaning it’s usually full. A full restaurant is always a good sign!

Breakfasts are served until 4pm at FEED, with their burger menu served from 12pm til close. You’ll find simple, good quality ingredients cooked well and served with a smile. All burgers can be single or double patty, and there is an impressive selection of fries & sides on offer. As you’ll see, the prices are all very reasonable – and the portions are generous.
FEED are proud to use local ingredients in their food, with 100% Isle of Wight beef used for all of their burgers.

You might find that you have to wait a short while for your food – their kitchen is very small, as you’ll see when you visit – but the pleasant atmosphere and sound of trains rolling overhead will keep you entertained while you wait. And trust me – they’re worth the wait!

I opted for the Smokey Bacon burger – a single patty to allow room for sides. Every aspect of the burgers are excellent. A locally sourced beef patty topped with crispy streaky bacon, cheese, caramelised onion, red onion, lettuce, pickles and chipotle sauce. I love that FEED used two types of onion on this burger, as that’s not something I often see and onion is one of my favourite toppings. The burger was juicy, all of the flavours worked so well together and I savoured every bite. A winner for me!
Coming in at just £7 for a single patty (£9 for a double), this burger is well priced and a real crowdpleaser. It’s also worth noting that the patties are served cooked through and not pink – which is a big YES for me.
You’re probably used to seeing pictures all over social media of ridiculously messy, cheese-oozing, quadruple stacked, impossible to eat burgers – and I can’t tell you just how refreshing it is to eat humble, delicious burgers at FEED that aren’t pretentious and attention seeking. They let the ingredients do the talking, and they are murmuring all the right things!

We chose to have the garlic chilli fries with our burgers – and it was a very good choice. They were amazing! I love having garlic as much as possible (Tom is very lucky indeed) and as soon as I spotted these on the menu I knew we had to have them. Coated in garlic and with a spicy kick, the fries were perfectly cooked and crisp – some of the best I’ve ever had.
The garlic chilli fries came in at £2.80 for a generous portion, which are enough to share between two if you’re ordering sides. (Although if you don’t fancy sharing, I don’t blame you – they are delicious)

Alongside our burgers we chose to order onion rings, chilli cheese bites and coleslaw. The onion rings were very good – crisp, well cooked and better than a lot of other ones I’ve tried.
The chilli cheese bites were by far my favourite, and I definitely devoured more than my fair share! I love jalapeño, and these cheesy morsels were filled with melted cheese and chopped jalapeños – spicy, moreish and each was a good size. Order these when you visit!

FEED is by far one of my favourite food spots in Portsmouth, and in my opinion serves the best burgers in Pompey as well. I’ve tried other popular independent burger spots and haven’t had good experiences – and FEED definitely deserves a spot right at the top of your list of places to visit the next time you’re in town. If you’re planning a trip to Gunwharf Quays for some shopping, FEED Portsmouth is the perfect place for a bite to eat!
Well-priced delicious burgers, all day breakfasts, a unique location and service with a smile. Visit their website here and have a browse through their menu – I promise you’ll find it hard to resist!

Hi Kat, FEED sounds delicious but I wondered if you could give any advice about parking please? Or is there a better way to get there?
The best place to park is probably Gunwharf! Otherwise there is some on street parking along the road outside FEED which is pay & display. 😊
Looks absolutely delicious….fabulous photography and description…very tempting 😘
Wow, this burger sounds good and this venue is right up my street!
