Breakfast at Cherry Trees Cafe, Padstow

An unassuming cafe on the streets of Padstow, with traditional floral tea-room decor and limited seating. That’s precisely where we headed for breakfast in Padstow – and who would have guessed that Cherry Trees Cafe could be just so good?

On our recent holiday in Padstow we ventured out one morning on the hunt for breakfast. In Padstow there are lots of options – from cheap and cheerful, to expensive and underwhelming – and all the way to places like Stein’s Cafe for an excellent meal. We were on the lookout for somewhere a little different, not owned by one of Cornwall’s celebrity chefs – and that is precisely what you’ll get at Cherry Trees Cafe.

Normally we wouldn’t consider a cafe with floral decor and chandeliers – but looks can be deceiving, after all! The cafe was almost full when we arrived and soon had a queue stretching onto the street outside, so we knew it would be a good choice. Shall we head inside?

We squished ourselves onto the only remaining table, ordered a pot of tea and perused the menu. Can I just take a moment to appreciate the rainbow teapot? An assault on the eyes at 8.30am, but we loved it!

On the menu you’ll find favourites like the Full Cornish Breakfast and a veggie version to match, alongside stacks of pancakes and other delicious options. There’s no need to hurry as breakfast items are served until 4pm, so settle in and take your time choosing! Prices are reasonable considering the local ingredients and generous portions, and all of the dishes are cooked to order.

Onto the main event – and what a glorious stack of pancakes these were. I ordered the Banana pancakes and was a little surprised at the size when they arrived – they were enormous and fluffy. Served with grilled banana, smoked bacon & maple syrup, you just know that this combination is going to taste good – and it did. I pleased to say I polished off the lot, and I would definitely order them again.

Tom opted for the Harbourside Start – toast with bacon, farm shop chipolatas and a fried egg, with extra salmon added on for good measure. We were on holiday, after all! The sausages were meaty and tasty, the egg was runny and the smoked salmon was excellent. A winning breakfast, and a great way to start our day.

If you find yourself heading to Padstow, make sure to visit Cherry Trees Cafe. You’ll find them right next to the harbour, facing over the water. If you don’t fancy eating in, Cherry Trees cafe also have a takeaway window for their homemade cakes – and I can vouch for how delicious they are! We bought a slice of lemon drizzle which was absolutely incredible – possibly the best I’ve ever had – and a slice is the perfect size for two to share.
