Burgers at Three Cuts Burger & Tap, Portsmouth

AD – This meal from Three Cuts Burger & Tap was given in exchange for a review.

There’s a new burger spot in Portsmouth that is seriously good – serving up big burgers, fried chicken & delicious sides. Three Cuts Burger & Tap opened up on Elm Grove in Southsea a couple of months ago and has been wildly popular since opening their doors!

Owners Eryn & Caroline took over the premises two years ago (previously named Jags), just before COVID started – which, of course, wasn’t the best timing! After continuing takeaway food options throughout the lockdowns, they decided to go ahead with their original plan to rebrand & refurbish – and so Three Cuts Burger & Tap was born. Both with backgrounds in hospitality, Caroline & Eryn have created a welcoming, comforting space with a fantastic menu (put together by Eryn!).

We headed over to Three Cuts Burger & Tap a couple of weeks ago for a long overdue dinner – and it totally exceeded my expectations!

The menu has an impressive selection of burgers, with beef chicken, veggie & vegan options – so there’s something for everyone! The portions are all excellent value, especially the wings & loaded fries – perfect for sharing.

The Menu

First up were the chicken wings! Anyone who’s been around these parts for a while knows that I am a HUGE fried chicken fan – if it’s on a menu, you can guarantee I’ll be ordering it!

So, of course we ordered the Ninja Wings to try! Crispy fried wings coated in a homemade ninja sauce, sprinkled with sesame seeds & spring onions to finish them off – I can confidently say these tasted even better than they look (and they look incredible!).

These were absolutely the highlight of our meal and are quite possibly the best fried chicken I’ve ever had! The combination of Asian flavours and delicious fried chicken is a match made in heaven, plus the portion size is very generous!

When you visit, please try these – you won’t regret it (and it will leave you wanting more!).

We also ordered the Brisket Croquettes to try – three enormous croquettes stuffed with spicy, tender brisket and served with a smokey tomato ketchup for dipping.

These were really tasty and I was surprised by how much meat was in these – much better than other croquettes I’ve tried!

Onto the main event – the burgers! We tend to opt for chicken burgers more often than beef, so of course we went for two of the fried chicken options.

I ordered the Dirty Chick – fried chicken thighs (yes, plural!), cheese, dirty mayo and lettuce all in a glorious seeded bun. This was a really good chicken burger that had everything I wanted – crispy fried chicken (and plenty of it), simple toppings and a great bun.

T opted for the Ninja Fried Chicken – which was an excellent choice considering how much we loved the wings! Fried chicken thigh tossed in the same Ninja sauce as before, topped with spring onions, mayo & viet-slaw.

This was GOOD – crispy, smothered in delicious sauce & encased in another great bun. If you’re a fan of Asian flavours and chicken burgers, this is the one for you!

We also shared a portion of P.I.G loaded fries, which were absolutely enormous – plenty for two or even three people to share! These came very highly recommended from the owners – so of course we had to try them.

The P.I.G fries come piled high with slow cooked crispy pork belly and are drizzled with a glorious combination of sriracha, hoisin sauce & garlic mayo. A generous sprinkle of spring onions and sesame seeds et voila – the P.I.G fries!

I’m personally not a fan of pork belly (I know, controversial) – but I absolutely loved these! The pork belly was tender, crispy & deliciously moreish – these fries are definitely a must order when you visit Three Cuts Burger & Tap.

Enjoy an action shot of me eating my burger! (oh how perfectly candid)

We had such a fantastic experience at Three Cuts Burger & Tap – it was so refreshing to see a menu with a clear focus on excellent burgers, and they really delivered. It can be hard to distinguish yourself when it comes to burgers as so many food spots are specialising in burgers these days, but Three Cuts have brought something truly special to Portsmouth and I’m so glad to see them doing so well – especially after such a rocky start!

There’s something for everyone on the menu here, plus a great cocktail menu (and a cosy drinks area downstairs) making this the perfect spot for an evening out.

You can find Three Cuts Burger & Tap on Elm Grove in Southsea, opposite The Southsea Deli! Visit their website here to have a browse of the menu, and follow them on Instagram & Facebook for all of the latest updates.

They also have a market stall which regularly features at Love Southsea markets – so keep an eye out for upcoming market dates & grab some street food!
