A classic British roast is something that’s hard to beat – so when I find a good one, I simply have to share it with you! I was invited to experience the Sunday lunch menu at BEEFY’s last weekend and I was completely blown away by everything – the food, atmosphere and service were all excellent and it was a very enjoyable meal. You’ll find BEEFY’s at the Hilton at the Ageas Bowl, on the outskirts of Southampton and with views over the cricket ground. Let’s head inside, shall we?

The decor at BEEFY’s is cosy and chic at the same time – filled with plush chairs, pinterest-worthy lighting and wooden floors.
We took a seat by the window and perused the menu – I opted for a prawn & crayfish cocktail followed by a half roast chicken, and Tom opted for confit duck leg followed by the roast rib-eye of beef. We arrived hungry and excited for a proper roast!

While we waited for our starters we were presented with a selection of freshly baked bread – a classic white, walnut & cranberry and an olive roll. Our personal favourite was the olive roll – but all three were lovely, and still warm from the oven.

Our starters arrived promptly with a smile from the waiter, and we couldn’t wait to tuck in. The confit duck leg, I’m assured, was delicious – melt in the mouth, bursting with meaty flavour and with a tangy berry sauce.

My prawn & crayfish cocktail was tasty – a classic done well, and with a twist of sweet chilli sauce. Very nice, and something I’d have again.

Shortly after our starters disappeared, the next course landed in front of us – and it was an impressive sight. Tom’s beef was tender, juicy and perfectly cooked, served with a leafy garnish and gravy.

The half roast chicken was beautiful – crispy, seasoned skin, succulent meat and falling off the bone, I couldn’t fault it. Both of our roasts came with a portion of vegetables to share, so we piled our plates high with roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, carrots, sweet roasted onions and greens – all of the classic trimmings for a British roast lunch.

Trying to contain my excitement at the feast laid out in front of me!

If you opt for three courses at BEEFY’s, dessert is served buffet-style. Laid out at one end of the restaurant is an impressive selection of desserts – grab a bowl and help yourself to whichever takes your fancy. We decided to try the lemon meringue pie (my mum’s favourite dessert!) and a choc orange tart.

Both of which were very nice! I love a good lemon meringue pie, and this one was a good’un. A generous amount of lemon curd and meringue, with a perfectly soft-but-crisp base. The choc orange tart was decadent and delicious, and went down a treat with Tom, who always loves a chocolate orange!

If you’re local to Southampton and are looking for a new place to try for Sunday lunch, BEEFY’s is definitely worth giving a go. Their Sunday lunch is very reasonably priced, with two courses for £19 and three for £23.95. Find out more and book a table here!
